Employee's Satisfaction and Non Satisfaction - Two Different Scales

Author: Assaf Katzir

As a manager it is very important to understand what influences on your employees.
When your employees are satisfied and not bothered with work place environment issues, they will be more productive. By understanding your employees' needs, you can take action to improve the employees' productivity and loyalty.

There are two different scales that influence on employees.

  1. SatisfactionThis scale starts from zero and goes up. This is a positive scale that expresses how much the employee likes the role and the level of self fulfillment with the role.

  2. Non-SatisfactionThis is a negative scale that can reach in its highest value to zero. The non-satisfaction can be reduced to minimum and then the value is zero. Non-satisfaction represents issues related to work place environment and compensation package.

By improving your employees' satisfaction and reducing the non-satisfaction level of your employees, you gain better productivity and higher loyalty from your employees. Employees differ from one to another; therefore motivation steps should suit each employee. It is important to understand that satisfied employee is very loyal and in most cases will not leave his job easily.

In order to improve employees' satisfaction and increase employees' motivation, you should take several actions such as:

  • Acknowledgment and appreciation for goal achievement by a letter or a memo.

  • Provide educational courses.

  • Provide career development map.

  • Encourage your employees to participate within company's decisions.

  • Increase employees involvement and commitment to the company and the jobThe difference between involvement and commitment is like the difference between the chicken and the pig in Bacon & Egg. The chicken is involved but the pig is committed.

  • Increase employees' identification with company's vision.

  • Provide benefits for employees' family.

  • Arrange company events (parties, fun day, holiday's parties').

  • Help your employees to balance their work in life.

In order to reduce the level of non-satisfaction among your employees, the following action can be taken:

  • Improve salary.

  • Improve workplace facilities and environment such as office, too crowded, too many people sharing one phone, far toilets, no coffee corner'

  • Provide health care plan.

  • Improve managers' sensitivity for employee needs.

  • Provide insurance plan.

As a manager you have to be aware to your employees' needs. You have to understand what bother them. By understanding it, you can reduce their "headache" and gain their commitment and increase their productivity and loyalty. Employee motivation is one of the major factors that can make the difference between one business to the other.
