The Benefits of Healthy Eating

Author: Khieng Chho

There really should be no discussion about this subject -- healthy eating and staying physically fit are the basic keys to an active, illness-free lifestyle. Risks in a lot of recurring illnesses like diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease are lowered by simply eating healthy, so, therefore, there should be no argument as to the good things it brings.

Eating healthy is probably the easiest and most important way to help you keep an active lifestyle and shield you from diseases abound. It boosts energy, improves your body functions, fortifies immunity and even prevents excessive weight gain or loss. Coupled with exercise, eating healthy could just be your ticket a longer, more vibrant life.

What can healthy eating habits do for you?

1) Eating healthy allows you to meet your daily nutritional needs. This is what our mothers and elementary teachers mean when they say we need to have a balanced diet. Thus, our daily food intake should include some amounts of grain, fruits, vegetables, milk or other dairy products, oils, beans and meat.

2) Eating healthy helps you enjoy life. The healthier your diet is, the more energy you have to face the tasks before you, no matter how strenuous and stressful. Of course, as mentioned earlier, you need to accompany this with proper exercise. While your energy level might be high up, you might not be able to cope with the activity if you lack exercise.

3) Eating healthy keeps the doctor away. The vitamins and minerals present in healthy food can boost your immune system and shield you from common illnesses. In some cases, healthy eating can even reduce risks linked with serious diseases like diabetes and cancer.

I'm always busy, how I can make sure I eat healthy?

This is simple. You can start by not skipping meals and by planning your intake. If you have normal weight, you can have three full meals per day and one or two snack breaks in between. There also are simple, stress-free ways to prepare healthy food. Make salads, take more raw food and drink juices. Good food doesn't always entail complicated preparation processes.

In addition, try to stay away from sugar. If you really can't help it, keep your intake to a minimum. If you feel sluggish, reach for a fruit instead of a candy bar. Choose alternatives that are high in protein and won't make your feel dehydrated after.

The common misconception about healthy eating is that you can only eat fruits and vegetables. While this is ideally true, it is not entirely so. You can still enjoy meats and poulty products, as long you take in a balanced diet.

Healthy eating does not have to equate to palate torture. Indulge yourself if you want. Just always remember that anything in excess is always bad.
