Religious Celebrations

Author: Party Pages / Kate Parry / Barry Hopkins / Uncle Wiggy

Great Britain is a fantastically varied country with many religions worshipped regularly by it's inhabitants. The main UK religions are:

1. Christianity
2. Islam
3. Hinduism
4. Sikhism
5. Judaism
6. Buddhist

Click on our website to show a calendar of events for each religion Whichever religion you follow, there are many annual or seasonal events to celebrate, and despite the sometimes huge differences between cultures and traditions, planning any party or celebration generally follows this guideline;

You must ensure that the type of party you select is appropriate to the day; Holding a daytime party with food and drink would be completely unfair to Muslims during Ramadan, and a Pig Roast would be extremely offensive to those who belong to the Jewish faith, however a feast of Kosher food would be gratefully received! You will need to advise your caterers of any dietary requirements, and also consider the availability of alcohol; Sikhs don't drink alcohol, so again ensure that suitable alternatives are offered. Ask your caterer if Crockery & Linen hire is included in their quotation, otherwise you may need to hire this separately. Before booking these, also check with your venue as to whether you will need to hire additional tables and chairs.

Pick your venue..... by this I mean for your celebration, not the worship! Some churches or temples have their own village halls or function rooms for hire at very reasonable rates, otherwise look at conference centres or hotels to provide a suitable setting. Marquees are very popular celebration venues, as they are easy to decorate and personalize to your own event. If you are having a Marquee, don't forget to also book the portable toilets!!

Decoration is a large part of any sort of event; choose from Balloons, Banners, Streamers, Floral Decorations and Table Ware, through to Favours and colour co-ordinated stationery, such as table plans and place cards. To take the strain off yourselves, you could hire a venue decorator, or simply just browse our directory for suppliers!

There are a huge amount of entertainments to choose from, childrens entertainers can include magicians, circus acts, bouncy castles and fairground rides. Admittedly, adults are also be delighted by these games and amusements, however for more 'grown up' activities, you could book a comedian, hypnotist or look-a-like. Music suitable for all ages include Discos, Jazz or Tribute Bands, or a perhaps you would prefer a more sedate atmospherical harmony by booking a Harpist, piper or singer to serenade your guests. Click here to see our article on choosing your DJ & Discos. There are also many original bands available who may be suitable to your occasion, you could ask your local place of worship if they have a choir or similar. You may wish to consider hiring a stage, dance-floor, lighting rig or PA system to make your party really stand out!

Don't forget all the other essential requirements, such as insurance and cleaners for the 'morning after'! You may wish to contemplate hiring a professional photographer to capture your event. Remember your photographs could be posted online or in newsletters to entice fellow worshippers to join your forthcoming celebrations!
