Poker Strategy: Focus on Each Session

Author: John Finney

You are probably told all the time to take a good look at your game each and every time you play but no one really tells you how to look back and how to properly evaluate the game style you applied, regardless if you won or lost. To better understand your past plays you can rely on some points that can bring you to a better evaluation and maybe to change the weak points you might find in your poker strategy.

Look for times when you lacked fundamentals. For example, when you are playing a hand you must firstly ask yourself what is your purpose with that certain hand you are holding and just what others can hold. You must know enough about strategies and common mistakes when evaluation the whole table to feel somewhat sure when making a decision. Lets say a person raises a bet and he has a pocket pair of Kings. Then on the flop there following cards were placed on the table : Ks Jc 9s. Then the turn came and it turned out to be a Queen of Hearts. Now our pocket Queens player has already a set and the opportunity to draw for a full house. The player sitting in the big blind position bets against him all of a sudden and naturally he calls. On the river there is another Queen displayed so he has hit his full house draw. Obviously the raising player checked but too late because his hand was already doomed to be beaten by a full house. This is a mistake done by not correctly understanding the fact that other can hit too, not only you. As a guideline, play big pocket pairs when you are facing less opponents and suited connectors when you are playing a lot of opponents.

See if you play too loose. Ask yourself this question and if you are playing too many cards over all try and limit them on the long run. Play only what is worth it and just fold hands that are low when you can, or at least dont bet or raise with them.

Another thing you have to look for within your game is if you get nervous and go on tilt. This is easy to spot. If each time you play you lose a lot over your last hands, making huge bets and getting involved in every hand you might be going on tilt. If, in addition to that at the end of the session you are a pack of nerves, then you should know that you most definitely have gone on tilt over that session and in the future avoid playing when you start feeling uncomfortable and frustrated.
