Property in Bansko? Investment & Lifestyle

Author: James Wittering

We are probably all familiar with the name Bansko. It has become synonymous with exciting international property investment opportunities, and is equally familiar to us as a burgeoning, rapidly developing ski resort modern, well equipped, economical.

Its little wonder, with a CV that includes the longest ski season in Bulgaria lasting until May, over 60 km of immaculately preserved pistes thanks to 12 Kassbohrer snow grooming machines and 40 TechnoAlpin snow cannons, state of the art facilities, and off piste credentials that enable Bansko to host the fourth International Extreme Skiing and Snowboarding Competition.

Since Banskos arrival on the European ski map, land prices have boomed, but relatively inexpensive labour costs mean that very affordable, off-plan accommodation is still available to buy and is therefore mooted to be amongst the most desirable in all of Europes emerging investment property markets.

But is there more to Bansko than great skiing and attractive investment opportunities? It certainly appears so; a large number of off-piste activities that also keep you out of those mekhanas are available, thanks to the regions rich cultural, spiritual and geographical heritage.

The same attributes which guarantee Banskos unique skiing identity, provide the outdoor enthusiast with prodigious exposure to some of natures finest views, wildlife, wetland and walkways.

The 100,000 acre Pirin National Park, in which Bansko nestles, is a UNESCO protected world heritage site. Local topography is hugely varied, with long river valleys leading to dramatic waterfalls, hilly grassland, and alpine uplands.

Needless to say, any amount of outdoor activity can be undertaken, and organised mountaineering, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding only add to the appeal.

The region is also famous for its wealth of geothermal sites. The nearby town of Razlog, just 5km away, has over 70 hot, mineral springs. Some of these are opened as public baths, and have long been lauded for their healthful virtues.

The cultural significance of Bansko cannot be underestimated, and today it encourages the reverence of its rich and impressive legacy. There are four museums and around 150 historical monuments located parochially. The icons themselves represent Banskos significant contribution to the cultural, religious, musical, artistic and traditional development of Bulgaria.

Today, Bansko hosts the International Jazz Festival in August of every year, which attracts a large number of visitors from around the world. In order to attract sustainable, year round, tourism interest, the Bansko municipality have orchestrated several investment initiatives aimed at improving local sporting infrastructure. Nearly one 18-hole golf course from the Ian Woosnam stable is already nearing completion with another ring fenced for planning. Construction is set to begin next year. Another 8M euro sports centre is soon to be underway, which will include a school of skiing excellence, and is to be developed as a joint venture between skiing ace, Marc Girardelli, and Banskos municipality.

Reading the previous few paragraphs, you could almost forget this is the same town that already basks in European acclaim for its skiing pedigree. Bansko really does seem to be able to offer something for everyone, at a time of year that will suit everyone especially those fortunate enough to have a residence in Bansko.
